A new twist on a tried and true solution:
For years, Freedom Scientific’s powerful Optical Character Recognition software coupled with their Pearl Camera has made for the most sophisticated and powerful scanning and reading solution available on the market. Its one drawback was that it requires a Window’s based PC to run it which meant that it had to be run on a desktop or laptop. Although laptops are portable, they still take up a fair amount of desk or table top space. Recently though, Window’s based tablet based computers have entered the market place at very reasonable prices.
I recently acquired a seven inch Window’s 8.1 tablet for around $150.00. After setting up the unit, I installed OpenBook and the Pearl Camera onto the tablet just to see how well it would perform; to my delight, it performed quite well; giving my laptop machine a run for its money. So who should care about this and why? Because having the ability to run OpenBook and the Pearl Camera on a tablet means that we now have a truly portable and very powerful scan and read package. Yes, there are very good OCR apps for the iPhone, but they are best suited for spot reading or reading a couple of pages at a time. With OpenBook and Pearl running on a tablet you can scan up to twenty pages per minute along with all of the powerful editing and other features offered by OpenBook. So if you are considering an OCR package and need portability, I would encourage you to strongly consider OpenBook along with the optional Pearl Camera. Who would benefit most from this technology? Students, business people, people who frequently travel, or anyone who is on the go. With just one cord and no power source required for the Pearl, all you need to do is plug it in and enjoy.
